Do I need experience to volunteer?
Not at all. We welcome first-timers and returning volunteers equally. If you have specific skills, we’ll match you to a role that uses them. If you just want to show up and help, we have plenty of places for that too.
How many hours do I need to commit?
Most individual shifts are 3 to 4 hours. Each role listing shows estimated pre-festival and festival week hours so you can plan ahead. You’re welcome to do one shift or the entire festival week.
When do volunteer sessions start?
We run open volunteer sessions every Tuesday evening and Sunday afternoon leading up to the festival. Check our Eventbrite or Facebook events page for the current schedule.
Can I choose my role or department?
Yes. When you fill out the sign-up form, you can indicate your preferred department and role. We do our best to match everyone to their first choice. Selective roles are filled based on experience and fit.
What should I wear?
It depends on your role. For most general and operational roles, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes are all you need. For public-facing roles like VIP Lounge Host, Opening Night Crew, or Filmmaker Host, smart casual is the right call. Your role confirmation will include specific guidance. When in doubt, dress like you’re meeting someone interesting. You probably will be.
Will there be food for volunteers?
Yes. We make sure volunteers on long shifts are fed. Snacks and meals are available at the volunteer lounge during festival week. Pre-festival work sessions often include food too — it’s part of what makes Tuesday and Sunday nights worth showing up for.
Can I volunteer in more than one department?
Yes, and we encourage it if you have the bandwidth. Many of our best volunteers split time between departments. Just note your preferences in the sign-up form and we’ll work with you on scheduling.
Is there a secret password?
Yes. Say “Let ’Er Buck” at volunteer check-in on opening night and something good will happen. Don’t tell everyone. Actually, tell the people you like.
I volunteered before — do I get any priority?
Yes. Returning volunteers get priority placement in their previous roles and first access to new openings before general sign-ups open. We remember the people who show up year after year — and we make it worth coming back.
What if I need to cancel a shift?
Life happens. Let us know as soon as possible by emailing volunteer@portlandfilm.org or messaging your shift coordinator directly. Canceling with 24 hours notice or more is fine and won’t affect your standing with us.
Can I bring my emotional support beaver to volunteer sessions?
Geronimo has already claimed that role. However, if your beaver has prior parachuting experience and a valid Idaho Fish & Game certification from 1948 or later, we will consider a guest appearance. Please have your beaver’s references ready. Geronimo is very particular about who he works with.
How do I apply for a Selective role?
In the sign-up form, there’s a field to note your role preferences and tell us about yourself. For Selective roles, describe your relevant experience and why you’re interested. We read every application. Being passionate and direct beats being vague and impressive.
What’s the wifi password at volunteer sessions?
It changes every week. This week’s password is the last name of the actor who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for a film that screened at the Portland Film Festival before it went on to win the Oscar. Gary Oldman’s performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour left audiences speechless here first. Password: Oldman. Tell your friends. Or don’t — fewer people at the snack table.
Can my company or organization volunteer as a group?
Absolutely. Group, corporate, and organization volunteering is encouraged. Email us at volunteer@portlandfilm.org to discuss group options.
Do volunteers get to watch films?
Yes. Dedicated volunteers can earn a festival pass that gives access to screenings. All volunteers also get the chance to watch films during downtime, space permitting.
What do volunteers receive for their time?
Volunteers working public-facing festival events receive a free festival t-shirt. All volunteers get access to our weekly community sessions, merchandise discounts, and the opportunity to earn a festival pass. Returning volunteers get priority role placement.
Is there an age requirement?
Volunteers 18 and older can sign up independently. Volunteers under 18 are welcome when accompanied by a parent or supervising adult. We also have youth programming through our Future Filmmakers program.
What happens after the festival?
The community doesn’t stop when the festival does. We host a volunteer wrap celebration, continue our weekly Tuesday and Sunday sessions year-round, and keep building toward the next year together. The festival is five days. The community is 365.
Wait — is Geronimo real?
One hundred percent real. In 1948, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game needed to relocate beavers from populated areas to the remote Chamberlain Basin. The solution: surplus WWII parachutes and custom wooden boxes. They tested the system with one very patient older beaver they named Geronimo, who was dropped again and again on a flying field until the design was perfected. When the real operation launched on August 14, 1948, Geronimo had priority reservation on the first plane. 76 beavers parachuted into the wilderness. 75 survived. They went on to transform the landscape — their descendants still live there today in what is now the largest protected roadless forest in the lower 48 states. This fall, Geronimo is coming home to Portland. We saved him a seat in the front row.
